The purpose of Wass Elementary is to ensure that each child reaches his/her highest learning potential.  We see each individual student as unique with his/her own strengths and abilities.  Our school philosophy is to create a positive and safe learning environment where students can thrive within a world class curriculum.  The heart of our school is the relationships amongst each other.  We know that students do better with teachers that care about them.  Our teachers develop personal relationships with all students and work collaboratively to educate the whole child.

Wass is a school that has excellent parental support.  Our PTO is very active, and these parents enhance both the learning and enjoyment for Wass students.  Parent volunteers are a visible aspect of our program.

We have some very innovative initiatives including our character education practices - The Wass Wolves' Way.  Our students love our monthly Wolf Pack meetings where we deepen and further our core values of Responsibility, Respect, Integrity and Perseverance.  Character education practices at Wass set the table for our teachers’ instruction and students’ learning.  Literacy is the spine of our instruction.  We use the workshop model to ensure a differentiated approach for our students.  Great instruction along with a focus on character core values have led to our school being named a State School of Character by Character.org, and nominated as a National Blue Ribbon School by the Michigan Department of Education.

The best part of our school is our children.  We have 430 children who represent just about every race and ethnicity that you can imagine.  It is truly remarkable to see how our children with such diverse backgrounds, cultures, religions, and appearances can get along so well with each other.  That's the Wass Wolves' Way!

Wass Elementary is located in the northeast corner of Troy, Michigan.  Troy is a pleasant suburb north of Detroit and many of our residents are affiliated with the automobile industry.  Our school is located in the middle of a subdivision and has an 18-acre playground.  Wass is named after Ruth Wass who was born May 23, 1913 in Troy and lived to be 101 years old. Her family participated in the development of our community.  She herself was a reading teacher in the district for many years, and Wass is located on land that once belonged to her family.

Be Wass kind!  Go Wolves!
Sincerely,
Mr. Matt Jansen
Principal, Wass Elementary School
